The U.S. has still not won the WBC -- or even reached the final -- in three tries.
"When you play double-elimination, it's a crapshoot," manager Joe Torre said. "And [Nelson] Figueroa pitched his tail off tonight."
The Dominican Republic made itself at home by beating the United States 3-1 Thursday night to earn a berth in the final round of the WBC, according to an ESPN.com report.
Erick Aybar singled home Nelson Cruz with the go-ahead run in the ninth for the Dominicans, who improved to 5-0. The Dominican Republic is assured of a spot in the semifinals beginning Sunday in San Francisco.

Alex Rios scored the go-ahead run without a play, and the Puerto Ricans rallied to oust Italy from the WBC with a 4-3 win Wednesday night, according to an ESPN.com report.
"With the lineup we had, it was a matter of time before we started scoring," Puerto Rico manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "Everybody was putting a little pressure on themselves. The coaching staff had to take it and make it seem like we were calm."
The Dominican Republic is still unbeaten in the World Baseball Classic.
They trailed Italy early on Tuesday, but Nelson Cruz's two-out, RBI single broke a seventh-inning tie.
Robinson Cano had three hits, including his second home run in the WBC.
"That's something you never see in the big leagues," Cano said. "Here we get a chance to come out and give high-fives to the guys. We can jump around. Nobody sees you trying to show somebody up. It's more about the chemistry on the team. We're all excited to be here, and we've all got a mission to win."
The United States defeated Puerto Rico 7-1 on Tuesday night in the World Baseball Classic.
David Wright drove in five runs, the last three with a bases-loaded double in the eighth. Gio Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings for the Americans.
"Obviously the adrenaline gets pumping for this tournament," Wright said. "You wear that uniform, you want to go out there and represent your country. Hitting in this lineup is ridiculous. You have some of the best hitters in the game, and it creates some matchup problems."
The Americans will play Thursday night against the Dominican Republic.
Josh Johnson threw more than three perfect innings against the Braves on Friday afternoon.
Toronto's Johnson fanned four of his last five batters and lowered his spring ERA to 1.17. He retired all 11 batters faced against Atlanta.
He was 8-14 with a 3.81 ERA for the Marlins last season.
Jose Reyes had four hits, Robinson Cano drove in three runs and the Dominican Republic beat Venezuela 9-3 on Thursday night in the WBC, according to an ESPN.com report.

Despaigne's home run off reliever Takeru Imamura at Fukuoka Dome gave Cuba a 6-0 lead. Cuba set up a second-round showdown with Group B runner-up the Netherlands on Friday.
